Gungahlin's Yerrabi Pond is the perfect north-side pram friendly walk in Canberra, with something on offer for the whole family.
In this series, we're exploring Canberra's most pram-friendly walks. With an awesome playground, flying foxes, skate park, public toilets, outdoor gym equipment, street art, coffee van, cafes, open spaces and a leisurely walking track, Yerrabi Pond really is the ultimate pram-friendly walking track.
If you've got kids and you live north side, you've probably been to Yerrabi Pond before. It has everything you need to keep the whole family entertained, including a lovely pram friendly walking track. It's easy to see why it is one of Canberra's most popular cemented walking trails.
Where to go to find the pram friendly walking track at Yerrabi Pond
There are multiple access points for Yerrabi Pond. If you've got kids with you, it's probably easiest to park in the car park off Wunderlich Street, which is closest to the playground, public toilets, flying foxes and skate park. There is also parking along Phyllis Ashton Circuit and Strayleaf Crescent. The pram friendly walking track runs around the perimeter for Yerrabi Pond, so no matter where you access it, you'll be able to follow it around the entire pond and find your way back to your start point.
What will I find at Yerrabi Pond in Canberra?
The Yerrabi Pond trail is a 4.2km long loop, so regardless of where you park, you can easily get back to your car within roughly an hour or so. If you're heading out just for a walk with your pram, the loop is a perfect trail for a decent length walk with nice scenery and a smooth path. There is a bridge about three quarters of the way along the pond, so you can make your walk shorter/longer depending on what you're after.
If you're heading out with toddlers or older kids, you'll definitely want to stop off at the playground. There's the usual playground attractions (slide, swings, monkey bars, etc), as well as a wheelchair accessible liberty swing. For little ones, there's a sandpit and other age appropriate climbing equipment. For older kids, there's two flying foxes, open space to kick a ball around, and a little walk away is a basketball court and skate park. The playground also has public toilets, BBQs, shaded picnic tables, and importantly, a coffee van.
Other attractions along the walking trail include outdoor gym equipment (which can be used by kids and adults), open spaces for playing, plenty of ducks and water birds, shops and restaurants along Phyllis Ashton Circuit, and some cool street art on the walls lining the tunnel underneath Mirrabei Drive.
Is this pram friendly walk also toddler friendly?
Yes, the Yerrabi Pond district, including the walking track, is super toddler friendly. There's open spaces to play, a wide track to walk alongside a pram, and as mentioned, all of the play equipment and other activities to do throughout the Yerrabi Pond area.
Is there shelter/shade along the walking track?
There are a few places along the track to stop and rest, although not all of them are sheltered. There are plenty of sheltered areas (including picnic tables and BBQs) near the playground and public toilets (next to the Wunderlich Street car park). There are also sheltered tables near the Phyllis Ashton Circuit parking area.
Is there a cafe/coffee?
There's coffee available from the Sylvie & Bruno van near the main playground. There's also restaurants and cafes along Phyllis Ashton Circuit.
Is this pram friendly walk in Canberra secluded?
The majority of this walk is very open, and there are very few secluded spots where you can't be seen by other people. It generally provides plenty of visibility and is quite safe.
Are there toilets?
There are toilets at the main playground area, near the car park off Wunderlich Street.
Are dogs allowed on this walk?
Yes, dogs are allowed. There is a dog swimming area on the north eastern shore of Yerrabi Pond.
Car Parking at Yerrabi Pond
There is plenty of parking all around Yerrabi Pond. If you're heading to the playground, your best bet is to park at the Wunderlich Street car park. There is also parking along much of Phyllis Ashton Circuit.
Overall...
Yerrabi Pond provides not only a tranquil and relaxing pram accessible walk, but also a whole lot of activities and fun for the rest of the family. It's kid friendly, dog friendly, and parent friendly too! Yerrabi Pond is definitely a top pram friendly walk in Canberra!
