If you're looking for a relaxing pram friendly walk in Canberra that will help you feel at one with nature, then the Dickson Wetlands is the place to go.
In this series, we're exploring Canberra's most pram friendly walks. The Dickson Wetlands is a quaint spot hidden behind residential streets, the Dickson Playing Fields, and Dickson College. If you didn't know it was there, you'd probably never find this quiet little nook. If you've got a pram and are looking for a short, gentle and scenic walk, then the Dickson Wetlands is the perfect choice.
About the Dickson Wetlands Pram Friendly Walk
The Dickson Wetlands is a great spot for a short, nature-filled walk. With a playground, artwork, seats, shade and a smooth walking track, there's everything you could need for a pram friendly walk in Canberra that will have you feeling at one with nature.
Where to go to find the Dickson Wetlands
The Wetlands in Dickson are on Hawdon Street, which is just off Majura Avenue. There is a small car park on Hawdon Street which provides access to the Wetlands.
What will I find on this pram friendly walk in Canberra?
The Dickson Wetlands is roughly a 1km walk. It's quite short, but is very picturesque, and is perfect if you're after a more leisurely pram walk. The pond and surrounds have been planted with a wide variety of locally occurring plants, and it's beautiful to simply walk and observe all of the gorgeous natural greenery around this area. The grounds are also really well-maintained, which makes it even more pleasant to walk around.
If you've got toddlers or older kids, there is a small playground on Dutton Street (which borders the wetlands track). It's nothing special, but will definitely help keep kids entertained for a little while. The walk also borders the Dickson Playing Fields, so if you've got little ones who need to burn off some energy, you can take them over to the oval easily.
Along the walk, you'll see some nice artwork and installations. Students from Dickson College and Majura Primary created tile mosaics that reflect the wetlands, and they are installed in the paving near the car park entrance.
Is this walk toddler friendly?
The Dickson Wetlands walk is definitely toddler friendly. It is a safe walk and the path is not too close to the water, so toddlers can walk alongside you easily.
Is there shelter/shade?
There are a few places along the track to stop and rest, and there are some spots covered by shade sails. There is dappled shade along the walk from the trees, but most of the walk is in the sun.
Is there a cafe/coffee close to this pram friendly walk?
No, there's no cafe that is immediately close by. However, the Dickson shops are a roughly 1.4km walk, so if you wanted a longer walk, you can follow the walking track at the back of the Playing Fields, follow it all the way along to Cowper Street, then turn left onto Dickson Place where you'll find the shops.
Is the walk secluded?
There is a clearly defined walking track that is mostly out in the open. There are a few spots that are more secluded, however for the most part, it's a relatively safe walk.
Are there toilets along this walk?
There are no toilets at the Dickson Wetlands. The closest ones would be at the Dickson Shops.
Are dogs allowed on this pram friendly walk?
Yes, dogs are allowed. You'll likely see many people walking their dogs around the Wetlands.
Car Parking around the Dickson Wetlands
There is a small car park off Hawdon Street that provides a decent amount of parking spots.
Overall...
The Dickson Wetlands is a serene pram friendly walk in Canberra, where you can be immersed in nature and explore the rich biodiversity of the area. It's certainly worth checking out if you're looking for a pram friendly walk!
