There’s something magical about autumn in Canberra. The air turns crisp, the leaves explode into shades of amber and gold, and the city puts on a show that’s nothing short of stunning.
Autumn is the perfect time to rug up, grab the kids, and make some wholesome memories. Whether you’re a local or visiting for the weekend, here are seven fun and family-friendly ways to make the most of autumn in Canberra.
ACT Heritage Festival
The Canberra and Region Heritage Festival is back this year, and with over 130 events on offer, there's something for all ages and interests. Check out some of the family-friendly offerings, including the Unearthed Treasure Hunt, Dinosaurs Unearthed, Tidbinbilla Nature Orienteering Quest, Fossil Fun, and much more. And most events are free, which is a big bonus! Find the full calendar of events here.
Leaf Peeping at the National Arboretum
Chasing colourful leaves is the ultimate autumn experience, and Canberra's National Arboretum is a dream this time of year. Wander through the forests of maples, oaks, and elms — all glowing in fiery shades. The Himalayan Cedar Forest is perfect for a family picnic, and the Pod Playground is a guaranteed winner with the kids. Bonus: the panoramic views over Canberra are breathtaking. Plan your trip by checking out their website here.
Take a Scenic Walk Around Lake Burley Griffin
Pull on your puffer jackets and take a family stroll or bike ride around Lake Burley Griffin. The central loop offers heaps of places to stop and explore — think Commonwealth Park, Kings Park, and Blundells Cottage, or you could even stop off at Boundless Playground. Pack a thermos of hot chocolate and maybe even a frisbee. The reflections of golden trees on the water? Chef’s kiss.
Truffle Hunt & Brunch/Lunch @ The Truffle Farm
Whether you're a truffle connoisseur, or you're only just learning about the joys of truffles, Canberra's The Truffle Farm is the place to be this autumn. Why not head to a Truffle Hunt & Brunch (or lunch!), where you'll learn about the history of The Truffle Farm and their journey to becoming one of Australia's most successful trufferies, watch the truffle dogs in action, and learn how to harvest and handle the truffles. At the conclusion of the hunt you will receive a three-course truffle brunch. Sign us up! Get all the info here.
Pick your own chillies @ Pialligo Harvest
The beautiful Canberra autumn is making the chillies at Pialligo Harvest pop, and they have plenty of fresh green chillies ready to be picked! Open for 'Pick Your Own' on Fridays (4-6pm) and Sundays (3-5pm). Grab the fam and get into the garden to pick your own produce! Head to their website or Instagram page for more info.
Visit the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
Get your nature fix with a day trip to Tidbinbilla. The walking trails are dotted with wildlife (keep your eyes peeled for koalas), and the cooler weather makes it a comfy time to explore. The Nature Discovery Playground is a highlight for younger kids, and the whole reserve is surrounded by gorgeous autumn colours. We think it sounds like the perfect day out! Get all the details on Tidbinbilla here.
Enjoy an Autumn Horse Ride at Burnelee
Older kids (and confident little riders) can saddle up at Burnelee Excursions on Horseback. Riding through the bush as the leaves fall is a special experience — and a great way to see a different side of Canberra’s natural beauty. Check out their website to book your spot.
