The Royal Australian Mint provides a fun, educational and free outing with the kids where family adventures come to life!
The Royal Australian Mint is completely free - from parking, entry, to the attractions inside, it’s a free day out for the family. With plenty to see and do, it’s a must-visit location for kids activities in Canberra.
What is The Royal Australian Mint?
The Royal Australian Mint is Australia’s national mint and sole producer of circulating coins for the country. It is also the custodian of the National Coin Collection, and has an enormous range of coins on display.
What will I find at the Mint?
The museum in The Mint displays all sorts of coins, medals and other interesting memorabilia.
They regularly have different exhibitions celebrating various elements of Australia’s rich numismatic heritage. The displays also have interactive elements that are perfect for kids, including a station where you can digitally create your own coin and display it on a large screen, and small interactive video games that are based around currency/coins.
There is a small kids corner called the ‘Little Visitors Vault’, with cute child-friendly displays (such as giant Gumnut Baby & Bluey coins adorning the walls), as well as some children’s books. This is a nice place to rest with smaller kids if they need a break. The Little Visitors Vault is where regular kids activities and public programs take place for little ones, including the Mini-Minties and Crafternoon school holiday sessions coming up in these April school holidays (find more info on activities in the upcoming school holidays here).
There is also a working factory inside the Mint, where visitors can watch robots (and people!) in action as they bring coins to life on the factory floor.
There is a gift shop, with a selection of limited-edition and commemorative coins and gifts, where you can also mint your very own coin - a perfect souvenir to remember your day!
There is also a cafe with treats for big people and little people. There’s a lovely outdoor area with undercover tables too.
How do I find The Mint?
Just minutes from the heart of Canberra, The Mint is located in Deakin. There are regular public transport services that stop close by. By car, The Mint is very easy to access. With free parking, plus 6 EV charging stations, it’s a very convenient spot to visit.
Is it pram friendly?
The Royal Australian mint is pram-friendly, with a lift to get to the upper level. There is also a dedicated Parents’ Room with baby change tables and facilities.
Parking
As mentioned, there is plenty of free parking at the Mint (which makes it a real winner in our books!).
