Let’s be honest - times are tough at the moment. And for those most vulnerable in our community, the Christmas season can be one of the hardest times of the year. Sometimes, an act of kindness, big or small, can mean the world to someone else.
Whether that’s through volunteering, donating, or simply reaching out to someone in need, it is important to think of others in the holiday season. The importance of giving to others is such a vital skill to teach our children. We’ve compiled a number of different ways that you can help others this Christmas, and get the kids involved in the process. From Christmas baskets, dignity bags for women and girls in need, becoming a guardian angel for a shelter animal, or helping those affected by cancer, there is a charity for all families to get involved with in Canberra this Christmas.
Communities at Work
Make Christmas special for vulnerable people and Canberrans in need this year by donating to the Communities at Work Christmas Appeal. Donate food, gifts or toys for both adults and children – or even money – to help people in need by sending your donations directly to Communities at Work. They are often in need of food and gifts for teenagers and adults. You can also donate to the Communities at Work food pantries. Their community pantries at Tuggeranong and Gungahlin support people who are going through tough times and need food and personal care items.

Basket Brigade Canberra
Basket Brigade is on a mission to deliver 350 baskets this year, can you help? The Canberra Basket Brigade is a small and dedicated group of volunteers who assist locals in need. This year they will be packing and delivering baskets of food and other goods to families in need. These deliveries are made anonymously and arrive just in time for Christmas.
This year, they are packing food hampers at Miles Franklin Primary School in Evatt. Children are most welcome to come along and join in the preparation of the hampers. They are also looking for volunteers to deliver hampers after the packing is done. It's a great experience delivering them as some wonderful magic moments can occur.
